Sense was founded as a support network in 1955 by parents of deafblind children living with congenital rubella syndrome. For the last 52 years, the organisation has grown to be one of the world’s largest charities working with deafblindness and continues to carry out ground-breaking, life-changing work with deafblind people and their families.
Our vision is of a world in which all deafblind children and adults are full and active members of society.
Our purpose is to work in partnership with others – deafblind people, their families, carers and professionals – to ensure that everyone challenged by deafblindness or sensory impairment with other disabilities, has access to advice, opportunities and support.
About Deafblindness
Deafblindness (or dual-sensory-impairment) is a unique disability which brings enormous challenges to the individual and those who support them.
Deafblindness has many causes and affects people of all ages in different ways. No two deafblind people or their disabilities are the same.
Many people will not be totally deaf and totally blind but will have some remaining use of one or both senses. Others will also have additional physical and/or learning disabilities as well.
