Staffordshire
County Council is a well established provider or quality outdoor
education. The Service has been operating for over 50 years and has 4
centres which offer a range of activities to schools, colleges and the
wider community.The Centres are Chasewater, Laches Wood, Shugborough and Standon Bowers and provide a wide range of activities including Archery, Sailing, Canoeing, Climbing, Kayaking and team building activities. Laches Wood Situated
in the heart of Staffordshire countryside the centre can
accommodate up to 100 students with additional ensuite bedrooms for
visiting staff. The accommodation includes 6 family rooms, all ensuite,
providing
opportunities for family learning. The extensive grounds include
woodland with wheelchair friendly paths
and trails and a large camping field for up to 120.Facilities include indoor and outdoor climbing walls, ropes and balance course, archery range, indoor cave labyrinth, large tipi, environmental areas and a games room. Canoeing and rafting take place on the Staffordshire & Worcester canal which borders the site. Chasewater Chasewater OEC, situated on the shore of a large lake, provides modern accomodation for 84 with an additional camping field for up to 70, while the grounds are currently being extended. A wide range of activities including dinghy sailing, all-terrain cycling, climbing, canoeing and archery complements an extensive choice of cross-curricular environmental studies. Orienteering, bird watching, ecology and transport studies are especially well provided for in the immediate area. Activities take place both locally and further afield in the Peak District, Shropshire and the West Midlands, with transport being provided by the Centre's own coach and minibuses. Shugborough This purpose-built Centre occupies over 10 hectares within the Shugborough estate and is bounded by Cannock Chase and the River Trent. The extensive grounds facilitate mapwork, orienteering, team building, problem solving, archery, freshwater ecology and a wealth of other environmental projects, while canoeing, kayaking and rafting take place on the nearby rivers and canal. Also on the site are indoor and outdoor climbing walls and an artificial caving system. The accomodation provides for 80 in dormitories and 120 camping. Standon Bowers The main building accommodates up to 112 students in dormitories plus additional camping in the grounds. On-site there are indoor and outdoor climbing walls, a caving system, adventure ropes course, covered swimming pool, and orienteering, compass and team building facilities. Environmental studies are supported by a field studies laboratory. Murray House - refurbished in 2004, this Edwardian building accomodates 21 students and staff, providing an independent base for groups who may also take advantage of the on-site facilities. |
